1 TYPESETTING GUIDE: on Mon Jul 05, 2010 5:54 pm

Typesetting can be done in Paint but it’s easier in Photoshop. You can make the text centered automatically, unlike in Paint. Also, it needs a lot of common sense to make proper judgment on where and how you will put on the translated texts…

One most important thing to remember is that TL notes are important. Never miss SFXs or author’s note. You can always encode it under the panels which normally have white spaces between them.

It also follows the principles of Translating, so you may want to check out the guide. The one text cloud, one line principle is important. Meaning, if a character is speaking and he has multiple lines, those lines are to be encoded in different text clouds where he is speaking chronologically.

As much as possible, DON’T USE HYPENATION! But, if the text will not fit anymore, then do so.

Japanese manga are to be read right to left, or as a famous manga-ka once said, “Imagine there’s an invisible inverted Z in the page”… That’s exactly how you typeset as well. Follow the text clouds!

Fonts are important too. Standard size is 30, then special cases can be allowed for special cases (tee-hee!). Here, we’ll be using these fonts:

Narration/Normal text clouds: Wild Words
Shocked text clouds: All-caps, bold Comic Sans MS
Ecchii effects: Curlz MT
SFX , TL and author’s notes: CENA
Small text/Background text (spoken by other characters on the scene): Bradley Hand ITC
Introduction Cards/Name Cards: Times New Roman
Gory text clouds: Chiller
Songs/Melody: Segoe Print
(supposedly) Foreign Language text: Lucida Calligraphy

That’s all that I’ve experience to typeset. If you happen to encounter more and might wonder if we’ll need it someday or in a project already, just post so we can discuss what to font use for those other cases.

Also, TL comments like, “??? Weird phrasing in Japanese” or “I love this scene” need not to be typesetted… or I’ll kill you.
lol!

Hi,
I'm sorry to bother you with such a matter.. But it seems I don't have a font called CENA on my PC; - and I couldn't find it anywhere on the net for download!
It's getting on my nerves already...
I've already started with typesetting (some pages for practice), but after reading the tutorial, I wanted to start over, and do it properly...
And now this! (I'm so sorry, I'm kinda desperate..T_T)

If you don't have the font, that's fine!
(because we here use Vista and MS Office 2007) you can just leave out the text that need CENA font, then just note it so we'd know...

also, I thought we we're cleaning and typesetting part 2-3...
what part are you trying to typeset?

ARGH>>> Sorry, my bad of talking scanlation problems here.... Razz

Thank you Misa-Misa, that helps me a lot... It's only the additional notes, that are supposed to be in CENA anyway, so I hope it's not much of a problem if I leave them out (and note that of course^^)

It just really really annoys me that among the hundreds and hundreds of character fonts out there I couldn't find this one anywhere... DX

So anyways, relieved for the moment, I'm gonna get back to work!^^

Font size 30pt is huge D=

Is it alright if I just use font sizes that would fit nicely in the bubbles?

Really? That's what me and Nagi-baasan use when we typeset...
You can see the typeset sample here:
Spoiler:
Nagi-baasan's sample page

and that's in 30

Anyway, if you think it's not "cute" you can always change it...
"it's the typesetters discretion"

P.S. We're using Photoshop, btw.

So we can use whatever fonts we're comfortable with? * - *
I never liked the idea of typesetters using Comic Sans as a font. It's too overused and not as manga-ish. :\

I use Wild Words. If you want, I can upload it with you all and share?

Yes~ I already explained. I used to be in a group, but I had to leave soon after joining. Sad I was working on my second doujin before my computer caught a virus or whatever and we had to wipe everything out. Sad

I'll upload and post them when I'm home, I'm at school right now and I don't have the fonts on my flashdrive.

Sorry, I don't know any translators. Sad
